Marina Abramović OPERE
Marina Abramović, born in 1946 in Belgrade, is considered one of the most radical and significant artists of contemporary art. Called the «godmother of performance art», she transformed the artistic language by exploring the body and mind as tools of creation. From her early works in the Seventies, Marina Abramović placed at the center of her research the relationship between artist and audience, redefining the boundaries of performance art and creating artworks that engage vulnerability, resistance, and transformation.
Marina Abramović artist
Marina Abramović represents a central figure in the history of performative art. Her career, started in Yugoslavia in the Sixties, is distinguished by continuous research on the physical and mental limits of the human being. The body has always been the main medium of the artist, becoming at the same time both object and subject of her actions. Her art is a profound reflection on the dynamics between presence, absence, pain, and survival.
During her career, Marina Abramović collaborated intensively with the German artist Ulay between 1975 and 1988, a period during which they staged iconic performances on the theme of duality and human relationships. After their separation, Abramović continued her individual research, reaching an artistic maturity that led her to perform in the most important museums and cultural institutions worldwide. Her work has been exhibited in prestigious venues such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Among the most important moments of the artist's career is the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1997 for the installation Balkan Baroque, a heartfelt and physical denunciation of the war in the Balkans. Abramović's commitment was also expressed in the project The Artist is Present (2010), a performance at MoMA in New York where the artist looked into the eyes of more than a thousand visitors for a total of over 700 hours. This performance definitively established Marina Abramović's role as a radical interpreter of the relationship between artist and spectator, body and space.
The work of Marina Abramović is not limited to performance but also includes video, photography, and interactive installations, aiming to create transformative experiences both for herself and for the audience. Her artistic philosophy is based on the concept of "presence": being fully present in the moment of performance is the key to overcoming self-imposed limits and generating an authentic connection with spectators.
Marina Abramović artworks
The artworks of Marina Abramović stand out for their expressive power and their ability to evoke deep emotions, addressing universal themes such as resistance, sacrifice, and vulnerability. Among her best-known artworks are the performances of the Seventies like Rhythm 0, in which she passively offered herself to the audience for six hours, allowing anyone to use objects on her for both pleasure and pain. This artwork became a radical experiment on group psychology and the role of the artist as a catalyst of collective dynamics.
Another iconic artwork is Balkan Baroque (1997), which earned her the Golden Lion in Venice: here the artist, immersed in an environment filled with animal bones and blood, performed for days obsessively cleaning the remains as a gesture of purification and collective memory.
Among the most evocative performances of Marina Abramović is Dragon Heads (1990), in which Abramović sat motionless surrounded by blocks of ice while five hungry pythons moved on her body. A photographic print from this performance is for sale at EmporiumArt for 2,500 euros. This artwork synthesizes Abramović's stylistic signature: the exploration of risk, fear, and immobility as a vehicle for inner transformation.
The artworks of Marina Abramović have always explored the tension between the artist's body and the surrounding space, making each of her performances a collective ritual in which the audience is called to confront their own emotional and psychological limits. Every performance of Marina Abramović is an invitation to live an intense experience beyond simple aesthetic enjoyment.
