ANTONIO ASIS BIOGRAPHY

Antonio Asis artist

Antonio Asis (1932-2019) was an Argentine artist, a prominent figure in the kinetic movement and Op Art. Born in Buenos Aires, he developed pioneering research on perceptual phenomena related to light, color, and movement. After studying at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires between 1946 and 1950, he moved to Paris in 1956, where he came into contact with important international artists and helped define the visual language of kinetic art.

Antonio Asis had a precise biographical and artistic path rich in significant contributions. Born in 1932 in Buenos Aires, Antonio Asis trained artistically at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes between 1946 and 1950. Even during these years, he stood out for his sensitivity to perceptual phenomena, which would become the distinctive trait of his poetics.
In 1956 Antonio Asis moved to Paris, where he found a lively and fertile cultural environment. Here he came into contact with artists such as Jesús Rafael Soto, Pol Bury, Victor Vasarely, and Yaacov Agam, connected to the Denise René gallery. This network of relationships offered Antonio Asis the opportunity to develop and refine a personal visual language based on the exploration of optical interferences and visual vibrations.
The artworks of Antonio Asis are characterized by a rigorous study of the relationships between light, color, and perception. His famous works such as Interférences concentriques and the Vibrations sculptures are emblematic examples of this research. Antonio Asis uses metal grids and geometric structures to create perceived movement effects, often exploiting monochromatic tonal variations that give rise to intense visual dynamics.

In the 1960s Antonio Asis established himself as one of the main protagonists of Op Art, participating in important international exhibitions such as the 1967 Paris Biennale and the exhibition at the Casa de Cultura de Grenoble in 1968. These exhibitions consolidated his reputation in the international art scene.
In 1971 Antonio Asis became a founding member of Groupe Position, a collective of Argentine artists residing in Paris. This group explores a wide range of approaches to movement: from mechanical to electric, up to the development of chromatic vibrations. Antonio Asis occupies an intermediate position, with artworks that blend geometric precision and artistic sensitivity, creating sculptures and installations that stimulate multisensory perception. In some of these installations, he includes tactile elements, inviting the viewer to interact not only with sight but also with touch.
The legacy of Antonio Asis is measured not only in his artworks, but also in his ability to foster dialogue with other Argentine and Venezuelan artists such as Julio Le Parc, Luis Tomasello, Horacio Garcia-Rossi, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Jesús Rafael Soto. His research on movement and perception helped redefine the boundaries of 20th-century visual art.
