Jun Dobashi was a Japanese painter and printmaker among the main exponents of Abstract Expressionism. He was born in Tokyo in 1910. he studied at the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts and became a member of the influential artistic group Shinjuki . In 1938 he left for Paris where he enrolled at the Académie Ranson before returning to Japan. Literally falling in love with the city, he returned in 1953 to remain there permanently until 1969.
Jun Dobashi held his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1954 and in 1956 received the Prix du Dôme . The following year, Galerie Iris Clert organized a solo exhibition for him. Between 1960 and 1969 the artist exhibited regularly at the Fricker Gallery.
In 1961 Jun Dobashi held a solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in London; this exhibition marks a decisive turning point in his career. In the same year the famous Galerie Schwarz of Milan published one of his engravings for his portfolio International Avant-garde (Volume 4). He also exhibited in the main avant-garde salons such as the Salons d'Automne and the Salon de Mai between 1956 and 1960 and at the Salon des Comparaisons in 1960.
In 1958 he is invited to exhibit at the prestigious École de Paris exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier, and also at the avant-garde exhibition Luminosité with great critical acclaim.
Jun Dobashi continues to exhibit in numerous international group exhibitions. His works are preserved in many important collections in Europe and America. Jun Dobashi died in Tokyo in 1965.
