Jun Dobashi was a Japanese painter and printmaker among the main exponents of Abstract Expressionism. He was born in Tokyo in 1910. He trained at the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts and became a member of the influential artistic group Shinjuki. In 1938 he left for Paris where he enrolled at the Académie Ranson before returning to Japan. Literally in love with the city, he returned in 1953 to live there permanently until 1969.
Jun Dobashi held his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1954 and in 1956 received the Prix du Dôme. The following year, Galerie Iris Clert organized a solo exhibition for him. Between 1960 and 1969 the artist regularly exhibited at the Fricker Gallery.
In 1961 Jun Dobashi held a solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in London; this exhibition marked a decisive turning point in his career. In the same year, the famous Galerie Schwarz in Milan published one of his prints for its portfolio International Avant-garde (Volume 4). He also exhibited in major avant-garde salons such as the Salons d'Automne and the Salon de Mai between 1956 and 1960 and at the Salon des Comparaisons in 1960.
In 1958 he was invited to exhibit at the prestigious École de Paris exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier, and also at the avant-garde Luminosité exhibition with great critical success.
Jun Dobashi continues to exhibit in numerous international group shows. His works are held in many important collections in Europe and America. Jun Dobashi died in Tokyo in 1965.
