BEUYS Joseph
Art, material, and social transformation
Joseph Beuys, born in Krefeld in 1921, is one of the leading figures in postwar European art. Sculpture, action, drawing, and teaching converge in a vision according to which creativity can have an impact on society. His idea of social sculpture expands the concept of the artwork beyond the material object.
Artistic language and exploration
Materials such as felt, fat, copper, and honey take on meanings associated with energy, protection, transformation, and circulation. In actions and installations, the artist’s gesture becomes part of a symbolic and political process. The meaning is not limited to visual appearance, but also involves narrative, experience, and participation.
The artworks and techniques
Beuys also produced drawings, posters, and multiples, considered tools for disseminating artistic ideas. An original multiple, conceived by the artist as part of a defined edition, is not automatically a reproduction. Edition, technique, provenance, and certificates are particularly important for properly assessing these works.
