Word, image, and experimentation
Mirella Bentivoglio, born in Klagenfurt in 1922, was a leading figure in visual poetry and Italian verbo-visual research. Her work spans poetry, collage, objects, and installations, transforming letters and words into plastic and conceptual elements.
Language and artistic research
Language is removed from its purely communicative use. A letter can become a body, a symbol can take on weight and volume, and a word can be read as an image. Experimentation therefore concerns both the meaning and the material form of writing.
The artworks and techniques
Bentivoglio also played an important role as a promoter and scholar of women’s artistic research. In her prints, the relationship between graphic mark and word is central; in objects and installations, the same principle develops in space. Original collages and editioned prints must be described separately.
